Root, Root, Root for the Home Team: Guide to Baby Cakes Games

The Big Easy has a big history with America’s pastime. In 1993, The Zephyrs arrived from Denver, Colorado to pick up the slack. After a (controversial) name-the-team contest in 2017, The Zephyrs moniker was laid to rest, and thus the New Orleans Baby Cakes were born. Head to the Shrine on Airline in Metairie and watch our very own Triple-A team, the ‘Cakes take on their foes in the Pacific Coast League, and while you’re at it, why not bring the whole #NOLAFray team?

Read on for our guide to making the most of your ‘Cakes game day!

Take me out with the crowd

Like any good ballpark, the Shrine on Airline has a few different options when it comes to your game day seating experience. Of course, you’ve got stadium seats in the lower and upper deck, but might we suggest something a little more exciting?

Like any good establishment in New Orleans, The Shrine gives you options to turn the game into a party! The Hospitality Suites can fit anywhere from 20-50 people and are air-conditioned (score!), come fully furnished with TVs, and have catering options.

With 20 or more friends you can watch the game from the Party Shack, which gets you in the action with a field-level view from the right field corner and has catering available. Not feeling the heat? With 20 or more you can cool off and watch the game from the Pool. Hang out poolside, take a dip, and enjoy optional catering. What other ballpark has that?!

Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack

Is it even a baseball game without a beer and a hot dog? No worries! The Shrine has all the ballpark classic eats you’d hope for like hot dogs, hamburgers, soft pretzels, and nachos. There are beers a plenty (and Thirsty Thursday specials every week!), as well as a fully stocked bar. There are a few fun novelty items like bottomless popcorn in a plastic helmet, and Dippin’ Dots in mini souvenir helmets (great for modeling on your cat after the game). And, of course, you can get your peanuts and Cracker Jack!

Let me root, root, root for the home team

One of the biggest advantages of Triple-A baseball is that the vibe is more low key than a Major League game. Of course (mostly) everyone wants the Baby Cakes to win, but they’re mainly at the park to have a fun time. The wacky between inning entertainment and fun promotions give ‘Cakes games a special charm that feels extra homey.

Classic bits include the Mascot Race (Go Boudreaux!), Tire Roll Race, King Cake Shuffle up on the jumbotron, and our personal fave, the Bouncing Horse Race. Many games include giveaways and special themed nights, and most Friday night home games feature fireworks shows. You can see the full schedule online.
