Weekly Wins: Things to Do in New Orleans 5/1 – 5/7



Hot off the presses, here’s your fresh set of Weekly Wins! This week is all about moving and grooving. We’ve got plenty of ways for you to work hard, and then play hard, so grab your gym shoes and your dancing shoes and get out there!

Wednesday 05/01

Stretch Ya Brass: Sunset Yoga, City Putt (City Park), 6 p.m.

Grab your mat and find your center with this free community yoga session. This all-levels class is brought to you by Move Ya Brass, so you know it’ll be just as fun as it is relaxing.

Free Pick Up Ultimate, Lafitte Greenway, 7 p.m.

Whether you’ve been playing ultimate for years or have only thrown a Frisbee at the beach, come join your NOLA Fray Fam for some pick up! Just bring a light and a dark shirt, a water bottle and athletic shoes (cleats are recommended). We’ll provide cones and a game disc, though we encourage you to bring your own Frisbee if you’ve got one!

Thursday 05/02

Jazz Fest Day Five, Fair Grounds, Thursday- Sunday

Thursday’s headliner is Widespread Panic. Other notable performers include Rita Coolidge, Tom Jones, Mavis Staples and Ziggy Marley.

Yoga & Live Music: The Rolling Stones vs. Fleetwood Mac, Church of Yoga, 6-7:15 p.m.

The Church of Yoga invites all to a “night of celebration of what the Fest could have been!” Allie Porter will be playing Jazz Fest dropouts Rolling Stones and Fleetwood Mac hits during this flow class. The class is all-levels, so you can Go Your Own Way. Yoga plus Rock n’ Roll? That’s a combo sure to give plenty of satisfaction!

Free Soccer Open Play, Lafitte Greenway, 7 p.m.

Whether you’ve been playing soccer for years or haven’t played since you were young, come join our NOLA Fray crew for a game of pick up! We’ll meet at the large multipurpose field on the Lafitte Greenway at 7 p.m. to split up into teams and take the field. We’ll provide all the soccer equipment!

Friday 05/03

Jazz Fest Day Six, Fair Grounds, Thursday- Sunday

Friday’s headliner is Chris Stapleton. Other notable performers include Gary Clark Jr., Kermit Ruffins & The Barbecue Swingers, Gladys Knight and Los Lobos.

Hancock Whitney Zoo-To-Do, Audubon Zoo, 8 p.m.

Already missing the Mardi Gras balls? You’re in luck! It’s time to break out your best black tie and head to the zoo for their most anticipated annual event. This fundraising gala features live music from headliners like The Main Attraction Band, cuisine from over 70 local restaurants, premium cocktails, a silent auction and even a luxury car raffle. And all of this against the beautiful, wild backdrop of the Audubon Zoo’s exhibits!

Freedia Fest, Republic NOLA, 9 p.m.

Back for its 8th year, CEG and Nolafunk present the 8th Annual NolaFunk Series During Jazz Fest, which “features a diverse collection of special performances from musicians inside and out of the New Orleans cultural sphere who all embrace the spirit and essence of the city.” Saturday’s event is the 4th Freedia Fest, a performance by the NOLA icon and Bounce legend herself, as well as Boyfriend, Khris Royal and Dark Matter. The last three years all sold out, so be sure to get your tickets online soon!

Saturday 05/04

Jazz Fest Day Seven, Fair Grounds, Thursday- Sunday

Saturday’s headliner is Dave Matthews Band. Other notable performers include Tank and the Bangas, Aaron Neville, Big Freedia, Pitbull and Diana Ross.

Jammin’ on Julia 2019, Arts District on Julia Street, 6-11 p.m.

With performances by Bon Bon Vivant, Shawn Williams, DJ Hollagraham and more, this celebration of art and music will have everyone jammin’! Take to the streets for art, music, food and drinks, and then stop in the numerous galleries for even more art, music, food,and drinks!

Chewbacchus’ May the Fourth, The Dragon’s Den, 9 p.m.- 2 a.m.

Celebrate Star Wars Day with the hard-partying super nerds of the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus (lovingly known as Chubes)! At 9 p.m. the Browncoat Brass and Companionettes will get you moving and grooving downstairs, then head upstairs at 10 p.m. for a dance party of epic proportions led by DJ Legatron Prime. If you’re feeling extra spicy, arrive at 7 p.m. and catch the Talk Nerdy To Me Burlesque show upstairs before the dance party.

Sunday 05/05

Jazz Fest Day Eight, Fair Grounds, Thursday- Sunday

Sunday’s headliner is Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue with the Nevilles. Other notable performers include The Radiators, John Fogerty, Chaka Khan, Herbie Hancock and Buddy Guy.

Cinco de Mayo Street Fiesta, Casa Borrega, 11 a.m.

It’s time to salt those rims- the margaritas are coming! Join Casa Borrega for an all day fiesta of Mexican culture. Expect delicious food and drinks a plenty, and live music well into the night. Viva Mexico!

Crawfish de Mayo: A Swamp Carnival, NOLA Brewing, 2-7 p.m.

Join the Krewe of Dystopian Paradise for a Cinco de Mayo that is all New Orleans: “crawfish, all-you-can-drink beer, costumes, music and a Mardi Gras krewe party!” Dust off your favorite Carnival costume and get ready for carnival games, circus performances, face painting, water balloons and even an all-ages bouncy castle. Oh, and did we mention crawfish and beer? Tickets available online.

Monday 05/06

St. Roch Community Yard Sale, St. Roch Market Area, Noon- 5 p.m.

This free community event is held on the first Monday of every month. Clear out some junk by setting up your own booth, or just peruse the myriad of treasures for sale from local artists, crafters, hoarders and junkers. You can find everything from kitchenware to art to antiques to…junk!

Brewery Bingo, Port Orleans Brewing Company, 7 p.m.

Mondays just got a whole lot better! Join your NOLA Fray fam in the Tasting Room every Monday night for Brewery Bingo. With free entry and multiple chances to win, you’ve got nothing to lose!

Tuesday 05/07

GiveNOLA Day at NOBL, New Orleans Boulder Lounge, 10 a.m.- 10 p.m.

Get your climb on at the Boulder Lounge for a great cause! Half of all the day pass sales will support LOOP NOLA, who provides outdoor adventure programs for local public school students.

Evanescence, The Saenger Theatre, 8 p.m.

Have you been asking yourself, “when will someone Bring Me To Life?” Well have no fear, Evanescence is coming to New Orleans! Relive the early 2000s with Amy Lee and her fellow goth rockers as they play the soundtrack of all your teenage emotions. Tickets available online.
