Free Wine Tasting with Cheese Pairing

What’s better than a nice glass of wine at the end of the workday? How about a free glass of wine at the end of the workday! When I Get Home by Solange Knowles, Film Screening

She may be Bey’s sister, but Solange Knowles is a superstar all on her own merit. Not just a singer-songwriter, Solange is also a visual artist, and this special screening is a director’s cut of When I Get Home, her interdisciplinary performance art film and features new scenes and musical arrangements. MechaCon Anime Convention

Louisiana’s biggest and longest-running anime and fan convention is back for another year. Not just for hardcore fans, MechaCon is open to everyone with geeky inclinations and will have tons of events throughout the weekend. Not to be missed is the formal cosplay ball, signings with voice actors and industry guests,  Artists Alley the charity auction, and the cosplay contest. Going is a no-brainer, the hard part is figuring out what to wear! ( Hyatt Regency // 10 am -5pm // $60)


Saturday 07/27    

1st Annual Louisiana Art Car Festival

This inaugural festival celebrates form and function across the lake in scenic Abita Springs. Free registration and free admission mean this fest will bring all kinds of art car enthusiasts together to admire a wide variety of art cars. A panel of artists will recognize outstanding entries. Oh, and did we mention Abita Brewing Company is just down the road? There’s no law against drinking and admiring cars! ( Abita Springs Town Hall Park // 8am-2pm // Free )


Taste of Africa Mini-Fest

A food truck is like a mini restaurant- think of this fest as the food truck of festivals! Showcasing the history of African heritage and culture in New Orleans, this fest will have tons of great African and Afro-Caribbean food and drink. While you’re chowing down, listen to African music, play games, and watch authentic dancing and drumming performances. ( Deja Vieux Food Park // 4pm-12am // $10)

New Orleans Brass Practice

Have you always thought roller skating was a little too polite? Now’s your chance to try out everyone’s favorite contact rolling sport, roller derby! Local team the New Orleans Brass are looking for new recruits interested in learning the sport. This practice is open to anyone interested, just bring your gear (skates, helmet, pads, and mouthguard), arrive a few minutes early to get set up, and prepare to sweat. Need to add a little more zen to your Sunday? Check out this free, all-levels yoga class, and get yourself an awesome (discounted) beer afterward.
